Direct Shares
At RFS Advice we believe direct shares advice is best provided by professional full-time managers.
We access this via a IMA, individually managed accounts. This process allows us to control the outcome for clients by having qualified professionals manage the stock selection and transactions on a daily basis. It delivers size and scale benefits to all clients.
Longer term investors need exposure to growth assets to outperform inflation and grow the purchasing power of their assets in ‘real’ terms. Trying to time markets can actually increase the risks in your portfolio as if you are sitting in cash when the share market has a 54% year, your long term returns will look nothing like the average above.
Unfortunately, many clients do leave the markets at exactly the wrong time and re-enter the markets well into the boom. Part of our role is to help you with these decisions and sometimes to simply persuade you not to make bad ones. We do actively change asset allocations based on risks we can see in the market but will always source your agreement before a significant change is made.
Do you know there are 3 ways to manage your share portfolio?
The first is via an online low cost trading account, the second is with a broker and the third is a fully managed direct share portfolio.

Managed Direct Share Portfolio
We work with you to identify your key performance objective. You may be focused on a portfolio that delivers Income or Growth, or a Combination of the two. We then adjust our allocations and portfolio’s to weight the results to your desired outcome.
Direct Trading
The challenge with doing your own trading is how you gain access to accurate information to make a truly informed decision.
Do you get to meet key decision makers in companies, company directors and how do you perform competitor analysis?
We have a large number of clients join us who have traditionally used a direct share broker. While the broker has been pro-active the clients have become concerned that as the broker is paid per trade they are conflicted and may be trading simply to ensure an ongoing revenue stream. The broker may be doing a good job however this leads to the concern, “Are they trading to meet their needs or yours?”
Additionally, their performance is not benchmarked against any of the normal measures such as the All Ordinaries Index and certainly not against any extended time period.
While it is nice to talk about the ‘wins’ in the portfolio, it is the total return including fees that counts.
At RFS we have access to a number of brokers who we have confidence in and align their investment philosophies with the broader objectives of our clients’ portfolios
Separatley Managed Accounts
A complimentary or alternative access to direct shares is through the use of Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs).
A SMA provides the backing of professional managers or indexes and research for investment decisions however the shares are held in your name. They have low transaction costs and many have an established track record to review.
You can choose specific holdings that you want included in the portfolio with the balance being actively managed by a professional team of analysts. Clients with an interest in stock picking can use this to provide a more diversified portfolio than they could build for themselves and gain access to sectors of the market that they avoided due to lack of specific knowledge.
Nearly all the reporting and tax work is done for you.
